Ceasefire Vigils - Catholic Worker D.C. (Wave of Prayer Litany)
Excerpt of Statement
Welcome/Opening Reflection
Good Afternoon. We greet all government workers, tourists, visitors and Secret Service agents in a spirit of peace and nonviolence. On behalf of the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker, I'd like to welcome everyone here present for this nonviolent witness. A special thank you to members of Christians 4 Ceasefire, and other faith groups that are represented here today.
Surrounded by a Holy Cloud of Witnesses, we come to the White House today to say Yes to the God of Love, justice and nonviolence and No to the idolatrous forces of greed, oppression, violence, death and destruction. We are here today because we refuse to be indifferent to evil—the evil of injustice, killing, war and genocide. We ask God's mercy for the ways in which we and our nation have been indifferent to and complicit in evil. We feel and hear the suffering cries of human beings in our world, and especially in the land called "Holy." Mindful of our personal and societal need for repentance and conversion, we recognize that it is our responsibility to do what God commands: to revere all life as sacred, to love our neighbor, to beat swords into plowshares, and never to kill. We therefore believe that to love our neighbor means we must renounce all injustice, violence and killing, no matter who the perpetrator is. And we must denounce all forms of racism, antisemitism and Islamophobia!
[Tomorrow marks the anniversary of the martyrdom of 6 Jesuits, their housekeeper and daughter who were murdered in San Salvador in 1989. We remember Ignacio Ellacuria, Jouquin Lopez y Lopez, Amando Lopez, Ignacio Martin-Baro, Juan Ramon Moreno, Segundo Montes, Elba and Celina Ramos, and all the martyrs of El Salvador and call them here into our presence today. ]
Just as the U.S. provided military aid and weapons to the Salvadoran regime to repress and kill Salvadorans calling for an end to their oppression, the U.S. is doing the same thing in Israel today by providing military aid and weapons to Israel to carry out its genocidal war in Palestine and Lebanon. These words from martyred Salvadoran Saint Oscar Romero need to be heeded now more than ever:
I'd like to make an appeal in a special way to the men in the army...When you hear the words of a man telling you to kill, think instead in the words of God, "Thou shalt not kill!" No soldier is obliged to obey an order contrary to the Law of God. In His name and in the name of our tormented people who have suffered so much, and whose laments cry out to heaven: I implore you! I beg you! I order you Stop the repression!
We live in a warmaking empire founded on genocide and slavey. The triple evils Dr. King identified as racism, economic exploitation and militarism are the hallmarks of a political and economic order that is rooted in white supremacy, systemic violence and oppression, and dominated by corporate power. Before the election the Doomsday Clock was already set at 90 seconds before midnight, due namely to the existential threats of nuclear weapons and the climate crisis, worsening world tensions, and AI. The perils facing the country and the world post-election are now even more ominous. The forces of fascism, racial hatred, violence and destruction are pervasive. As people of faith, we must remain rooted in the Word of God and the Gospel of Jesus, renounce Christian nationalism, and resist the powers and principalities. The times require us to dig deeper into the well of faith so that we can be sustained as Gospel peace and justice makers in our resistance to the deadly forces of evil. Going deep into the well of faith is something Dorothy Day, Archbishop Romero and so many peace and justice makers have done--past and present, as they sought spiritual sustenance, courage and hope to respond to the perils of their time. The great S. African Archbishop Desmond Tutu said this about the meaning of hope: "Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness."
In this perilous time, we need to live and boldly proclaim God's reign of love, justice, peace and Gospel Nonviolence as we seek to help create the Beloved Community.

Last week, amid U.S. presidential elections, Israel officially confirmed that Palestinians will not be allowed to return to homes in northern Gaza, an area that still has hundreds of thousands of civilians unable or unwilling to follow evacuation orders. For over a month, the Israeli Occupation Forces -IOF has obstructed most humanitarian aid and medical assistance, allowing widespread famine and diseases to spread while it continues indiscriminate bombing campaigns.
Loving God, we lack the words to fully describe the continued suffering of the people of Gaza, who like the Psalmist, face death all day long. (Psalm 44:22) Amid famine, disease, and genocide, we know you can hear the cries of your people under the rubble of homes, from hospitals struggling to care for the wounded and sick, and from families who know not where to turn for safety. We ask you to intervene for the people of Gaza and be their shield against these unimaginable acts of violence. Holy Spirit, fill our hearts with the depths of your justice and awaken the hearts of the international community that we may end the violence that has robbed people of their lives and dignity.

Last week, the Palestinian Environment Quality Authority stated that the Israeli forces have dropped more than 85,000 tons of bombs on the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023, surpassing the amount dropped during World War II. The Authority added in a statement that “the ongoing Israeli shelling of the Gaza Strip has led to the destruction of vast areas of agricultural land and the contamination of soil with toxic chemicals that will hinder farming for decades.”
Creator of the Earth, we grieve for the people of Gaza which have borne the weight of violence, and for the generations to come who may never know the land as it was. Lord, we lift up those who have cared for and loved this land for centuries, who are now left without the means to plant, to grow, or to reap. We pray for the families who relied on the soil for their sustenance, for the children who will be denied its harvest, and for all whose heritage and hopes are bound to this earth.

Last week, Israel sentenced 70-year-old Sheikh Jamal Mustafa, an imam of a mosque in the al-Issawiya neighborhood of Jerusalem, to three years in prison for “incitement to terrorism.” Israeli authorities have also imprisoned two other imams in Jerusalem on similar charges. Unfortunately, the crackdown on religious figures in the region is nothing new. In August, the Israeli occupation banned Grand Mufti and preacher of the al-Aqsa Mosque, Sheikh Ekrima Sabri, from entering Al Aqsa for six months. Sheikh Sabri was arrested the same month after Israeli forces raided his home in the al-Sawana neighborhood of East Jerusalem. He was later released.
God of Freedom, protect those who worship amid fear, and grant courage to those barred from sacred spaces. Soften the hearts of those in power, that they may choose mercy over oppression. Bring peace to every street and let justice flow through the land. May all worship in freedom and safety, and may peace and dignity be restored to all.

Last week, Qatar suspended its mediation efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza until the parties “show their willingness and seriousness to end the brutal war and the ongoing suffering of civilians.” Over the last few months, there has been evidence indicating Netanyahu’s plans of thwarting any ceasefire agreement, and due to the impasse of talks, a top member of Israel’s negotiating team for the release of the hostages had already resigned.
God of Peace, with no ceasefire in sight, we live in fear of this situation of instability and the spreading of violence across the region. In a world where belief in international law and human rights has been shattered, we ask you to bring light and healing to us. Lord, bring willingness and urgency to those in power to end the suffering of civilians and pursue a vision of human rights. Renew the spirit of all who seek accountability, and soften all hearts that peace may prevail and suffering may end.
Lord in your mercy…hear our prayer
Last week, the Israeli Knesset on 6 November voted for a collective punishment law that allows authorities to deport family members of Palestinians who carry out armed operations against Israelis to the Gaza Strip and “other locations.” Parents, siblings, children, and spouses would be targeted by the law. They can also be deported on the basis of expressing “support or sympathy” for the act of “terrorism” committed or for publishing “praise, admiration, or encouragement.”
God of Justice and Compassion, we cry out for those in the Holy Land facing unjust laws and relentless oppression. We grieve for families torn from their homes and exiled. We see mothers, fathers, children stripped of their rights, their dignity trampled, and we lament for a system that punishes them for who they are. Holy Spirit, awaken the world to the suffering of those crushed beneath the weight of occupation and unjust systems. May your light shine into the darkest halls of power, and may your love bring freedom to the oppressed and courage to the persecuted.

Update from Democracy Now re: Gaza and Lebanon
Yesterday (Oct. 24), the following tragic news was reported on Democracy Now:
Situation Update 1:
Situation Update 2:
Statement of Solidarity and Urgent Appeal
We pray and stand in solidarity with all who grieve today and who are acting for peace. We pray and stand with Palestinian and Jewish brothers and sisters, as well as all Christians, Muslims, Jews, and all people of goodwill everywhere who are advocating for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon, that Israel, with U.S. support, not attack Iran, and working to end the cycle of violence.
Additionally, we join with many in advocating for:
immediate release of all Palestinian and Israel prisoners;
an end to settler violence and Israeli attacks in the West Bank;
allowing unimpeded delivery of urgent humanitarian aid to Gaza and restoring U.S. aid to UNRWA!
an end to all U.S. arms sales and military assistance to Israel;
removal of 100 U.S. troops and U.S. weapons systems in Israel;
removal of the USS Georgia Trident nuclear submarine with 150 Tomahawk cruise missiles from the Middle East region;
an end to Israel's siege and occupation of Gaza and the West Bank;
an end to apartheid and self-determination for the Palestinian people;
just peace for Palestine and Israel;
a comprehensive peace with Iran, Israel and the U.S.
As we remember all Palestinian, Israeli, and Lebanese victims who have been killed, and as Palestinians face forced displacement, starvation, torture and endure living in an apartheid state—all with U.S.-backed military assistance—let us act in solidarity with everyone advocating for nonviolent solutions to end this tragic conflict and bring about a just peace in the Holy Land and the Middle East/ West Asia. This includes courageous student groups, 100 city councils across the country who have passed cease-fire resolutions, and the more than 150 NGOs Call for a Ceasefire in Gaza, Lebanon and Israel and End to Impunity amid a Spiraling Humanitarian Catastrophe and Escalating Regional Conflict. U.S. complicity in supporting Israel's genocidal war must end!
On Oct. 18, 2023, Pope Francis declared:
“The number of victims is growing and the situation in Gaza is desperate. Everything possible must be done to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe. The world already witnesses so many open war fronts. Lay down weapons and heed the cries for peace from the poor, the people, and the innocent children. War solves no problems. It only sows' death and destruction, increases hatred, multiplies revenge. War erases the future; it erases the future. I urge all believers to take one side only: that of peace."
The times are extremely perilous. Now more than ever we need to heed Dr. King’s prophetic words: the choice before us is "nonviolence or nonexistence."
