A Call for Urgent Action

Dear friends,

I hope you are well. I am writing to inform you of three crucial developments that require urgent action:

  1. Rep. Betty McCollum has reintroduced the Support Palestinian Children and Families Act. We encourage you to contact your representative today!

  2. I also invite you to demand accountability for slain Palestinian American Journalist Shireen Abu Akleh. Yesterday, during mass, Shireen's loved ones commemorated the one year anniversary of her tragic murder.

  3. Tomorrow, Sabeel is launching its most recent booklet, Overcoming Christian Zionism in the Quest of JusticeRegister Today!

Many blessings,

Jesse Steven Wheeler

“Not $1 of U.S. aid should be used to commit human rights violations, demolish families’ homes, or permanently annex Palestinian lands.”

- Rep. Betty McCollum

Tell your representative to cosponsor or support the Defending the Human Rights of Palestinian Children and Families Living Under Israeli Military Occupation Act, reintroduced by Rep. Betty McCollum (MN-04) for the new congressional term.

As reported by Jeff Wright in Mondweiss:

"[On 5/5/23], Rep. Betty McCollum (MN-04) and 16 cosponsors—supported by a growing list of civil society and faith groups—reintroduced the Defending the Human Rights of Palestinian Children and Families Living Under Israeli Military Occupation Act for the 118th Congress. The legislation would ensure accountability for the use of U.S. taxpayer dollars.

"According to a press release from McCollum’s office, 'The legislation prohibits Israel’s government from using U.S. taxpayer dollars in the Occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem for the military detention, abuse, or ill treatment of Palestinian children in Israeli military detention; the seizure and destruction of Palestinian property and homes in violation of international humanitarian law; or any assistance or support for unilateral annexation of Palestinian lands in violation of international humanitarian law.'"

On May 11th, 2022, news broke of the death of Palestinian American journalist, Shireen Abu Akleh as she was reporting on an Israeli army incursion into Jenin. Initial reports from official Israeli sources attempted to blame her death on fire from Palestinian insurgents. However, it quickly became clear that the only fighters with a clear line of fire at Shireen and fellow journalists were snipers from the Israeli Occupation Forces. Six months after her death, and after Forensic Architecture published a definitive report debunking the ever-evolving Israeli narrative, the US Department of Justice announced that the FBI would be conducting its own investigation into Shireen's death.

It is important to Shireen's family, to journalists and human rights activists around the world, that this investigation be completed and the findings made public. You can help keep Shireen's memory alive by contacting the Department of Justice and inquiring as to the status of the report and urge them to complete and publish their findings.
