A Christmas Prayer for Palestinians in Bethlehem (EPF-PIN)
Today, as we mark the birth of Christ, we remember that Bethlehem -- the place of Jesus’ birth -- does not often lie still, as is romanticized in the hymn O Little Town; rather, Bethlehem is an occupied territory. It is a place where the presence of Zionist settlers, and the violence associated with them, creates an active climate of constant fear and insecurity for the Palestinian population, who are frequent targets of harassment and intimidation. This can impact not only the daily life of residents but also the livelihoods of farmers, shop owners, and others who are at risk of violence or land confiscation. On this holy day, let us pray for the liberation of Jesus' birthplace.
A Christmas Prayer for Palestinians in Bethlehem
O Holy Child of Bethlehem,
Born into the humble shelter of a stable,
You who were cradled under the watchful eyes of shepherds,
Hear our prayers for the people of your birthplace.
We lift up the Palestinians living under occupation in Bethlehem,
Grant them the peace and freedom promised by your coming.
May their struggles for justice be met with compassion,
And their yearning for dignity be answered with hope.
On this day when we celebrate your birth,
Let your light shine brightly over the land of your nativity.
Break the chains of oppression, mend the wounds of division,
And fill every heart with the courage to walk the way of peace.
In your holy name we pray, Amen.
