From Zionism to Apartheid: Is the Discourse Shifting? Should it?

In 1973, the UN General Assembly condemned “the unholy alliance between South African racism and Zionism.”  In 1975, the UNGA followed up by passing Resolution 3379, determining that “Zionism is a form of racism.”  That Resolution was revoked in 1991, as part of the effort surrounding the Madrid Peace Conference to bring about a two-state solution.  While Zionism got a reprieve of sorts, it has been, more or less, a consistent focus of attack by those supporting the movement for Palestinian liberation.
In the last two years, however, along with the widening perception that the two-state solution is dead, has come a flurry of reports from Israeli, Palestinian and international human rights arguing that there is a one-state settler-colonial reality from the River to the Sea, a reality that meets the definition of the international crime against humanity of apartheid.  The primary question presented seems to be whether Israel will continue as an apartheid regime, or whether that regime will be dismantled in favor of one democratic state.
This webinar will explore what effects these recent developments might have on our advocacy:

  • Should we still be making a frontal assault on Zionism?

  • Can Zionism be reconfigured in a way that is consistent with the vision of one democratic state with equal national rights for Israeli Jews and Palestinians and equal personal rights for all its inhabitants -- a "cultural" rather than "political" Zionism, cleansed of its anti-Palestinian Jewish supremacy?

  • Can we advocate for Palestinian and Jewish liberation without being "anti-Zionist?"

  • Can we bring liberal Zionists into our conversation by not rejecting them and their Zionist label outright?

  • Should we shift the focus of our discourse from Zionism to Apartheid?

ICAHD-USA is delighted that Mark Braverman will be joining Board Co-Chair Bob Herbst to discuss these questions on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, at 12:00noon ET.  Mark is the Executive Director of Kairos USA and serves on the International Coordinating Committee of Global Kairos for Justice.
